I found this long skirt at my local thrift store.
It started out looking pretty cute. |
I could've worn it as-is, but it was kind of a weird length on me. As far as skirts are concerned, I prefer them to be either floor length or right above the knee. I just didn't think I'd wear it unless I did something to it. Also, it was only $0.50 (As you can tell, I mainly stick to the $0.50 rack!!)
Not a very clear picture, but you get the idea. |
So, I got to snipping. I cut off a good portion of the bottom of the dress as I planned to make this into a short skirt.
Another crappy picture. I swear I know how to take good pictures. |
I had a lot of fabric leftover.
Finally a good picture! I knew I could do it! |
I pinned my new hem and sewed it right up.
I'm not done yet.. There's more work to be done. |
I tried on my finished skirt and was alerted to the fact that the super cool pockets this dress had, hung just slightly lower than my new hemline. So, I sewed up the bottom of each pocket...
Back to crappy pictures for now. |
... then I snipped the ends off. This made it so the pockets no longer peaked out from the dress. This is what I ended up with:
It's not summer anymore, so my legs are my natural color: see-through. |
I ended up with a pretty cute, wearable skirt. But I also ended up with all that leftover fabric, remember?
I bought some elastic... I bet you can tell where this is going! |
I knew going into this that I'd have enough fabric leftover to make a little skirt for Quinn, too. I got a few measurements from her, which she obligingly stood still for!
I measured about 28.5 inches and then cut. |
I pinned the open edges together... then sewed it. |
Then I pinned and sewed the hidey hole that my elastic band would go into. |
I put a safety pin on the end of my elastic to make pulling it through the hidey hole easier. |
And after all that work, I created the cutest little dress for Quinn from the scraps!! Look at how cute she is!!
She was so thrilled to get to wear her red tights! |
But.. That's not all. I *still* had some leftover fabric:
Holy moly, what am I going to do with this? |
I only have one daughter, so I couldn't make another skirt. The fabric is too girly so I couldn't make a pair of pants or little vest for Mitchell. I decided that I'd just save it for another project for the time being.
But before I put it away, I had a little fun with it:
Do I remind anyone of Julia Stiles in "Save The Last Dance" or what?! |
Haha Who am I kidding?! That is not a good look for me at all.. I'm really glad for how the dresses turned out. In fact, I can't wait to wear them together!! I think it would be really cute to match with Quinn:
Cute-o-rama!!! |
I'm really happy with how this refashion turned out. And I'm pretty impressed that half of this refashion was actually making something, albeit something really easy, from scratch.
Milla just can't leave me alone |
